Plate heat exchanger models and integrated receivers are now in
You may be one of the engineers who have devoted the last months, or years, envisioning the most efficient operation for your energy system.
Or one who looks in detail at a particular heat exchanger stack configuration.
Or who simply has carried over years the frustration of not finding “your” plate HX among available models in Modelica… Like in that song: you have “ten thousand spoons, when all you need is a knife”…
Well, if you are among the latest, now is your time! I am here to say loudly: with the new release of the Heat Exchanger Library, plate heat exchangers are in!
But let me first say Heat Exchanger Library is created specifically to help you with design, dimensioning and stacking of …heat exchangers. This means that with the Heat Exchanger Library you capture the effects of detailed geometries and positioning on your system performance.

So the last addition to Heat Exchanger Library are plate heat exchangers. Liquid-Liquid, Liquid-Gas and Gas-Gas, all join now the family.
You may want to know that the plate HX model can handle all possible flow configurations: you can set the overall flow direction as well the flow direction of channel plates individually, for both primary & secondary side.
We have included two plate-surface geometries: a plain one and the Chevron type of surface. With Chevron type come specialized models for pressure drop and heat exchange correlations.
It is handy to know that the models are implemented such that you can add your own custom plate geometries and correlations.

Condensers with receivers
Another exciting feature of Heat Exchanger Library 1.3 is a condenser model with integrated receiver. You can configure it in various ways:
- Place the receiver after any pass
- Add a desiccant to your receiver
- Initialize using enthalpy or a predefined liquid level
- A function allows you to set the quality at the exit of the receiver, either user defined or based on the receiver geometry.
In addition, all functionalities of the flat tube heat exchangers are also incorporated in this heat exchanger model – you can use it in stacks, with inhomogeneous flows and specify geometry specific correlations.
