The 1st International Modelica workshop took place in 2000, just two years after Google incorporated and one year before the iPod. 80 simulation enthusiasts met then in Lund, Sweden to discuss Modelica, an emerging systems modeling language. The ideas presented sparked a revolution in analytic model-based system engineering.
Since then, Modelica has spawned a rich eco-system of vendors and industry users, collaborating and competing through an open standard.
The 10th International Modelica Conference finally returned to its Swedish birthplace in March 2014... along with 400 Modelica and FMI fanatics from all over the globe! The conference was opened by Modelon Inc. CEO Hubertus Tummescheit, who as a PhD student also organized the 1st workshop in 2000.
Some highlights from the 23 posters and 114 papers are given below, as selected by Modelon.
The conference was buzzing with FMI technology news in both paper presentations and exhibition. There was also a very well visited tutorial track on FMI with focus on the next version 2.0 of the standard, and the use of FMI in hardware-in-the-loop applications. Dassault Systèmes and Concurrent Real-Time demonstrated a new solution for FMI-based real-time complete-vehicle simulation.
The new parallelization techniques in Dymola  is combined with Vehicle Dynamics Library and SIMulation Workbench to obtain 150-DOF detailed complete vehicle models including geometric suspensions and powertrain that simulate with 1ms turn-around time. The new FMI support for hardware-in-the-loop solutions from dSPACE GmbH was also demonstrated live on a SCALEXIO platform.

A nice example for how Toyota Motor Company uses model-based design in their vehicle development comes with this paper, focused on a new small-size and low-impact vehicle using a novel concept with large and narrow tires.
The study is very relevant for vehicle researchers in early stage development phases, in the field of new concept vehicles or doing other types of concept studies. According to Toyota, "it was proved that these simulations were very useful to decide the proper specifications of a new vehicle in the planning phase."

The FMI sessions included new developments as well as testimonials and experiences from applying FMI in industry contexts. The study from Robert Bosch GmbH in Germany concludes that “FMI is the best available approach for tool-independent model exchange and co-simulation”, and emphasizes the importance of standards compliance and quality from tools and vendors to successfully develop its full potential for model-based collaborative engineering.

This is an enlightening industrial use-case from BMW and IPG on the deployment of a new FMI-based testing methodology to streamline MIL-SIL-HIL processes and reduce the validation efforts while meeting necessary safety targets.
The article describes how FMI tool integration can significantly reduce the validation effort of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), using as example Dynamic Light Functions and their testing through a Software-in-the-loop approach. IPG CarMaker is used as integration platform to test new software components in an integrated platform with Driver, Vehicle and Environment for early validation and verification of systems. "FMI brings light into darkness", say the authors of this paper.
